The types of body jewelry

Captive Bead Ring (CBR) - also known as BCR
This is perhaps one of the most well known types of body jewelry. The bead has two divots and is held in place by tension. The diameter of the ring's interior is what is important for sizing, as if the diameter is too small it will leave little room for swelling and pull at the piercing. Too large, and it is likely to get caught on things.
Fixed bead rings are similar, except the bead is attached and not removable. Segment rings have a removable segment that pops out, and seamless rings have a small hinge and appear to have no break. PP also offers a snap-fit CBR for larger gauges that makes it easier to insert and remove the jewelry.
The CBR comes in a variety of materials (titanium, surgical steel, acrylic, etc.) and can be worn in virtually any piercing - earlobes, cartilage piercings, the nostril, septum, genital piercings, etc.
Circular Barbell - also known as Horseshoe Barbell
The circular barbell is similar in shape to the captive bead ring, except that it is not a complete circle. The ends are screw-on balls (remember, righty-tighty, lefty-loosey). Like barbells and curved barbells, these come internally or externally threaded. As with the CBR, the measurement needed for ordering these is the interior diameter.
Like the CBR, circular barbells come in a variety of materials and can be worn in virtually any piercing. Differently colored or shaped ends are also available for purchase to customize the circular barbell.
Barbell and Curved Barbell
Barbells are another staple of body jewelry. The ends screw on just as they do for a circular barbell and are available in a variety of shapes and colors. Important for sizing is the distance from one end of the barbell to the other, in a straight line even for the curved barbells. Some extra "play" room for swelling and ease of insertion is recommended.
Barbells come in a variety of materials and can be worn in almost all piercings, although for some piercings it is more practical to wear a curved barbell rather than a straight one.
Nose Screw
These are one of the most common pieces of jewelry for wearing in the nostril. They come in a variety of lengths, measured from just below the jewel/shape to the begin of the curve. A right curve bends counter clockwise when you look at it and is meant for a left nostril, whereas a left curve is the exact opposite. There is also the option of buying a non bent screw and having your piercer bend it for you, which is the best solution.
Removing/inserting a nose screw can be tricky. To remove, pull it out gently and let it gently twist away from your nose. Continue to gently "screw" it out and you should have it. Be gentle when removing, and it may help to soak the area beforehand. To insert, gently insert the curved end into the hole and twist it, then "lift" it up, pushing towards your face, and let it sink into the piercing carefully.
Nose screws come in a variety of materials, but the most common are gold, titanium, and surgical steel.
Nose Bone
Nose bones are bad, bad, BAD! Just. no! Don't wear them.
There is the typical jewel/shape at the top, and then there is the normally gauged stem that is worn through the nose. But what's this at the bottom? Looks like a rather large disc/ball to hold it in place. Think about it for a moment. if your piercing fits snugly around that so it doesn't fall out, how are you going to get it out again without ripping off a chunk of your nose? Owie.
Plugs and Flesh Tunnels
Plugs are a favorite for people to wear in larger gauged piercings. These are measured much the same as a barbell - from one end to the other with some room left for it to fit snugly. There are non-flared plugs, which require you to wear an o-ring in the front and back to keep it from falling out. There are also single flared plugs, which have a front flare and require an o-ring in the back. Then there are double flared plugs, which have a flare on the front of back. To insert a double flared plug it is recommended to gently rock it in, as well as back out, and soaking it beforehand may greatly help (but not recommended with organics as water can damage them).
Flesh tunnels are essentially the same, only they are hollow in the middle so you can see through the jewelry. Cool, no?
Plugs and flesh tunnels come in acrylic, titanium, stainless steel, glass, and organic materials such as wood and bone.
Labret Post
As the name implies, one typically finds a labret post in a labret piercing. However, a labret post can also be worn in a cartilage piercing (conch, helix, etc.) in the earlobe, or even elsewhere. Essentially, a labret post is a barbell with a flat disc on one end instead of a ball. It is also measured the same way as a barbell is.
Nipple Shields
These are often worn for decoration and are worn together with a barbell. The holes are lined up with the piercing holes and the barbell is inserted through the nipple shield and then through the piercing. A longer barbell than normal may be necessary to accommodate the nipple shield.
Intimate Buttons
Often worn in genital piercings, such as those along the labia.
Talons, spirals, and claws
These are typically worn in lower gauges (i.e. below 8ga). They come in a variety of shapes, such as spirals, tear drops, claws, etc. They are perhaps best suited for stretched earlobes and come in a variety of materials, the most common of which seems to be organics such as wood and bone.
